Over the past year, we are still seeing a huge increase in the number of people working from home, resulting in more DBS work from home based DBS applications being requested.
We answer some of the most common questions we have received about home-based DBS checks over the past year, from both employers and employees.
What Is A Home-Based Position?
The official definition for a home-based position from the Government is:
The applicant carries out some or all of their work with children or adults from the place where the applicant lives.
Or
They live in the household of someone who is being or has been checked because they work with children and carry out some or all of their work from their own home.
With this in mind, it means that if the work is being carried out at the home of the person(s) being looked after, then it is not a home-based position.
At the moment, there is no legislation that allows a DBS check for individuals who live in the household of someone who is providing regulated activity personal care, healthcare or social work to adults who need it.
This means that Home-Based DBS checks are normally requested when children are involved.
Why Is There No Legislation Regarding Vulnerable Adults and Home-Based DBS Checks?
Usually, when looking after vulnerable adults, you would be entering their home – they would not be living in yours.
If you were to be looking after vulnerable adults in their own home/in a care home, you would just be required to get a normal Enhanced DBS Check With Adults Barred List.
Does This Mean Anyone Else Living In The House Needs A DBS Check?
Well, this is all down to whether the other person will have the opportunity to be in contact with the child.
If, for example, the other person who lives in the house would not be at home when the children are there, then they would not need a DBS check.
What Roles Require A DBS Work From Home Check?
There are various roles that would require a Home-Based DBS Check, but some of the most common include:
- Providing care to children (Jobs such as fostering, nanny’s, childminders).
- Roles that include regulated activities (Personal care and healthcare).
- Home tutoring children (At the applicant’s address).
What Level Of DBS Check Would Be Required For A Home-Based Role?
As you may have noticed, all the above roles mentioned involve some sort of interaction with children.
Any regulated activity involving children would require an Enhanced DBS Check with Children’s Barred List.
