What is an Enhanced DBS Check?

An Enhanced DBS Check shows any cautions, warnings, reprimands, as well as any spent and unspent convictions that an individual has received in the past. 

Local Police Forces can also add any information that they feel is relevant to the applicant and their DBS check.

What is Regulated Activity?

Regulated activity refers to specific jobs and roles that are carried out by people when working with vulnerable adults and children. 

There are various activities that would fall under 'regulated activity' and because of them, the person carrying them out would need an Enhanced DBS Check with Barred List Check.

Is Regulated Activity The Same With Children and Vulnerable Adults?

Regulated activity is different for both vulnerable adults and children. 

With that said, what is regulated activity classed as when working with these vulnerable groups? 

What is Classed as Regulated Activity with Children?

The following are always classed as a regulated activity with children:

  • Personal care for children.
  • Managing or supervising anyone else who is partaking in regulated activity.
  • Providing healthcare by a regulated healthcare professional (whether alone or under supervision).
  • Foster care, or registered childminding.

If the following are done regularly (more than 4 times in a 30 day period), they are classed as a regulated activity with children:

  • Unsupervised activities. This can be teaching, caring for children or driving a children-only vehicle.
  • Working in 'specified places' that have the opportunity to be in contact with children, for example, a school or children's home.

What is Classed as Regulated Activity with Vulnerable Adults?

The following are classed as a regulated activity with vulnerable adults:

  • Personal care for Vulnerable Adults.
  • Social work (when provided by a social care worker).
  • Assisting with shopping or the handling of money due to their illness or age.
  • Providing healthcare by a regulated healthcare professional (whether alone or under supervision).
  • Helping conduct their own affairs (under a formal appointment).
  • Assisting them to and from places where they receive personal, healthcare or social work.

So, if your job role includes any of the above, then it likely means that it involves Regulated Activity. Whether you are hiring full-time staff, part-time, or volunteers, they will need an Enhanced DBS Check with Barred List.
