When applying for a DBS Check, whether online or using the paper application method, multiple forms of identity documents are needed. As we will discuss, the type of documents used can vary depending on which Route the applicant must take.

The following article is only a quick guide on the documents required for a DBS check. If you would like more detailed information on DBS checks themselves, we have a full Help & Advice section on filling out DBS applications.

How Many Forms Of ID Do I Need For A DBS Check?

You will usually need a minimum of three types of identification when applying for a DBS check.

The types of documents needed will depend on the route the applicant has to take.

What Are The Routes?

There are three routes and all require different combinations of documents to be presented.

Route 1 is the favoured, and easiest route an applicant can take for a DBS check, but if this is not possible, it will go to Route 2 or 3.

Route 1

The applicant must be able to provide:

- 1 document from Group 1.

- Plus 2 documents from either Group 1, 2a, or 2b.

Across the documents provided, they must confirm the applicant's current address, their current name, and date of birth. All the documents must be the original, as well as valid (not expired).

Route 2

This route is taken if the applicant cannot provide a document from Group 1.

Therefore, the following must be provided:

- 1 document from Group 2a.
- 2 further documents from Group 2a or 2b.

As with Route 1, at least one of these documents must show the current address. The employer or organisation requesting the check must also use an appropriate external ID validation service to check the legitimacy of the documents.

Across the documents provided, they must confirm the applicant's current address, their current name, and date of birth. All the documents must be the original, as well as valid (not expired).

Route 3

When Routes 1 and 2 are impossible to follow, then this is the other option. Please note, however, that EEA nationals who've been a resident in the UK for less than 5 years, cannot use Route 3.

The following must be provided:

- A birth certificate issued after the time of birth (UK and Channel Islands).
- 1 document from Group 2a.
- 3 further documents from Group 2a or 2b.

Across the documents provided, they must confirm the applicant's current address, their current name, and date of birth. All the documents must be the original, as well as valid (not expired).
