For many years, self-employed professionals could only apply directly for a Basic DBS check. Enhanced DBS checks were typically restricted to employer-led applications.
That has now changed.
Eligible self-employed individuals can now apply for an Enhanced DBS check for self employed roles through dbs-check.co.uk.
At Aaron’s Department, we have worked closely alongside dbs-check.co.uk to help develop their software that allows individuals to request their own DBS check.
Can a Self-Employed Person Get a DBS Check?
Yes – Enhanced DBS checks for self employed individuals is now possible.
If you are self-employed, you can:
- Apply directly for a Basic DBS check
- Apply for an Enhanced DBS check, if your role meets the eligibility requirements
This is particularly relevant for professionals working in regulated activity, including:
- Private tutors
- Childminders
- Healthcare professionals
- Carers and support workers
- Individuals working directly with children or vulnerable adults
As safeguarding expectations continue to increase, many clients now require a DBS check for self employed professionals before work begins.
DBS Check for Self Employed – What Changed?
On the 20th of January, the DBS announced that self-employed people and personal employees can apply for Enhanced and Enhanced with Barred List(s) DBS checks through an Umbrella Body. However, this cannot be done through the Government – it must be done through a registered provider, like dbs-check.co.uk
If you are looking to hire a self-employed person or personal employee, you cannot apply for a DBS check on their behalf. They must apply themselves through an umbrella body.
Enhanced DBS Check for Self Employed Criteria
Enhanced DBS checks remain subject to strict eligibility criteria. They cannot be requested casually or “bought” without meeting the legal requirements set out by the DBS.
Without going into too much detail, if your role involves healthcare, working in care homes, schools, or with children, it is likely you will be eligible for an Enhanced DBS check.
When helping dbs-check.co.uk design the software flow for their application, we made sure to include a DBS questionnaire, which will help establish whether you are requesting the right level of check.
Basic vs Enhanced DBS Check for Self Employed
Basic DBS Check
Shows unspent convictions only.
Suitable for many self-employed roles where a formal regulated activity check is not legally required. Many individuals use it to help boost their clients confidence in their services.
Enhanced DBS Check
Includes:
- Spent and unspent convictions
- Cautions and warnings
- Relevant local police information
- Barred list checks (where applicable)
If your work involves regulated activity, an Enhanced DBS check may be required.

Built In-House. Designed for Compliance.
At Aaron’s Department, we originally developed our DBS software to meet our own operational standards. We needed something faster, more accurate, and easier to manage than existing solutions.
Once proven, the system was made available to trusted brands — including dbs-check.co.uk — allowing them to offer streamlined Basic and Enhanced DBS applications to individuals and organisations.
Because the platform is built and maintained entirely in-house, it provides:
- Full control over submission quality
- Continuous system improvements
- Secure data handling
- Scalable infrastructure
This is particularly important when processing sensitive applications such as an Enhanced DBS check for self employed professionals.
What Should Self-Employed Professionals Do Next?
If you are self-employed and require a DBS check:
- Apply for a Basic DBS check if you need confirmation of no unspent convictions
- Confirm eligibility and apply for an Enhanced DBS check if your work involves regulated activity
Eligible individuals can now request an Enhanced DBS check through dbs-check.co.uk, powered by Aaron’s Department’s in-house technology.
Please Note: If you are an individual needing a DBS check – please get in touch with dbs-check.co.uk with any queries. We are not able to answer or provide advice on their behalf.
