How to get a Free DBS Check
It is not possible to obtain a totally free DBS check, due to the costs involved in conducting and processing the check, but there are ways to reduce the overall cost.
Volunteer DBS Checks
Volunteers are able to get Standard and Enhanced DBS checks at a greatly reduced price, as the government waives its application fees.
This means that the only costs left are the administration fees of the Umbrella Body facilitating the check.
For someone to be considered as a volunteer, they must not be:
- Receiving any payment for their role (except for travel and other approved out-of-pocket expenses).
- On a work placement, or any sort of developmental course.
- Directly benefitting from the position the DBS application is being submitted for.
- In a trainee position that will lead to a full-time job or qualification.
All of those criteria must be met, or else the government will reject the application.
Covid Fast & Free DBS Checks
Previously, it was possible for essential workers to get their DBS checks the same way volunteers do, only having to pay the Umbrella Body’s admin fees. This government scheme has, as of the 10th of May 2023, come to a close.
It is no longer possible for healthcare workers or any other essential workers to have their DBS application fees waived.
