An Enhanced DBS Check is required for carers because the role involves engaging in Regulated Activity with children and/or Vulnerable Adults.

Can I Work As A Carer Before My DBS Check Comes Back?

It is against CQC regulations to start work as a carer before your employer has seen your DBS certificate. However, your employer can request an Adult First check to get you in to work sooner, before your DBS certificate arrives.

Adult First checks are designed to allow healthcare staff to start work as soon as possible. With them, the check of the Adults’ Barred List is done sooner than usual, and the results are sent out before the certificate arrives. If these results are clear, the applicant can start work under supervision. Once the DBS certificate arrives, the applicant still has to show it to their employer.
