Do You Need A DBS Check To Work With Animals? – Vet

One of the most common roles involving working with animals is a Vet. Vets are eligible for Standard DBS checks. There is no legal or regulatory requirement for vets to regularly renew their checks.

Do You Need A DBS Check To Work With Animals? – Dog Walker

Dog Walkers are not eligible for Standard or Enhanced DBS Checks. However, if you are setting up a dog walking business, obtaining a Basic DBS Check can be a good way of giving your clients confidence that you can be trusted to walk their best friend.

Zookeepers may be entitled to different levels of check, depending on their role within the Zoo. For example, if they are just feeding and cleaning the animals, a Zookeeper may only be eligible for a Basic DBS Check. But, if they are teaching children or Vulnerable Adults about the animals or are in a position where they may be left unsupervised with children, they may be eligible for an Enhanced DBS Check with the Children’s Barred List.

A Dog handler, working in security, requires an SIA Licence in order to operate. Getting an SIA licence requires a Standard DBS Check, so Dog Handlers require a Standard DBS check.

If you are considering a career working with animals that doesn’t involve providing them with healthcare or contact with children or Vulnerable Adults, then you will only be eligible for a Basic DBS check

If your position involves a high level of responsibility and care for animals, or involves coming into regular direct contact with Vulnerable Adults or children, then you will need a Standard or even an Enhanced DBS check.
